Fairy House from Air Dry Clay
Fairy House from Air Dry Clay
For Mother’s Day, I made my mom this, and also decided to share a tutorial on how I did it with you guys. For this, I’m using Air Dry Clay. They are very easy to use and does not require baking (hence the name) and can soften again by spraying water and keeping it in a container.

The instructions may not be the most clear, but hopefully the pictures will help. I apologize for the poor quality of the pictures. If you have any questions or have trouble understanding any step simply comment below.
Fairy House
Start by getting some clay and molding it into a cylinder shape. I made mine slightly more pear-shape like, where it’s skinnier at the top at wider at the bottom.

Take another chunk of clay and roll it out into a ball. Then press it gently on the workspace so that it’s a slightly flat circle.
Then, using your fingers (or tools but sometimes your hands are the best tool) press the outside of the circle down like this:

It should have a bit of a top hat shape. Curl the edges for a wavy edge.
Spray some water at where you want your door to be. Using your fingers or a tool, make a small dent the size of the door. Take some clay and shape it into that rectangular size.

Take a bit of clay and roll it into thin lines. Then put it around the door for a doorframe.

Spray some water above the door and make a small shallow hole there.

Roll out a thin line again and put it around the hole. Then cut two small ones and put one horizontal and one vertical, making a window.

Make a dent the size of the top of your house on the roof. Spray some water on it. Then, attach it on the house. The water should act like glue and since there is a dent, it should stick pretty well once you hold it there for a few seconds.

Use a large straw or some tool to press round circles on the roof. This is to create an outline for the polka dots.

Using tools you can find, or already have (yes, kid’s plastic tools from play dough kits can work too! 😂) make lines or patterns to give your house some texture and a more realistic look.

Once you’re done, leave it to dry.
The Grass
Now, let’s make the grass. This might take a while to dry so let’s make it first.
Fill a cup with a little bit of water. A little is enough, depending on how much grass you will use. A tablespoon or two should work. Add green paint or dye, depending on what you have. My goal is to use whatever I can find around the house. So be creative. If you don’t have something, feel free to find another substitute.
For me, I happen to have a bottle of fabric paint nearby that I feel like I won’t use in a long time. So I decided to use that. Though I personally don’t recommend using it because it can stain your clothing and are hard to wash off your hands.
Mix the green paint/dye into the water until it’s dissolved, and you have green water. That’s a weird way to phrase it… but you get the point. :P
If you have a mechanical sharpener at home, open the compartment with the shredded pencil shavings. Put some of the shreds into the green mixture and mix until the shreds are green and there isn’t any water left. If it is too wet, add more shreds.

Take them out and let it dry a little.
The Bunny
Roll out a small piece of clay into a round sphere for the head. Make a cone-ish shape for the body. Make the arms and legs by rolling them out. Attach two to the bottom of the body and two on either side of the body.
Make two bunny ears and attach it to the top of the head. Make a flat square for the plate and roll out tiny random shapes for the food on the plate. Attach it between the two hands.

Carefully paint the bunny with a thin brush.
Painting the House
Hopefully your house is dry. I recommend letting it dry completely before painting it. But if you’re like me who’s making a Mother’s Day gift the day before Mother’s Day, then you can start painting once it’s not too wet…

Using glue, attach it onto a piece of cardboard.
Landscape
Get a chunk of clay and add a bit of black paint in it. Mix it thoroughly until the clay has a shade of gray. Then, roll them into small round pieces and press them down lightly. Glue them to the cardboard to make a stone pathway.

Now, take the grass we made earlier, and stick them around the house and stone, leaving a small space for the bunny.

Carefully glue the bunny in place. It’s a bit hard, because it’s so small. If you have a steady hand it should work…

And there you go! These make wonderful gifts and are very cute!
Sometimes, the handmade ones are the most precious ones 😉
